1 Peter 1:24, 25
For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.
--KJV
In the name of the One Whose word endures forever. Amen.

God’s word gives us eternal life. Today we see that God’s word itself is eternal. Our world is temporary, and we have made most things to be disposable. The things that aren’t disposable are manufactured for “planned obsolescence.” Even our relationships are not sure things any more, and when someone gives us their word, it is meaningless unless we have it in writing.

But there is something that is permanent, and that is God’s word. It remains when everything else disappears. Why is this significant? It is significant because of the promises it makes. Our passage for today mentions the Gospel. The Gospel promises that God loves us in Christ Jesus, and that all of our offences against God are forgiven in Him. These promises remain forever. Amen.

Prayer:
Lord God our heavenly Father, Your word--Your promises stand forever. By Your Holy Spirit cause us to hold firmly to Your promises. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
--NASB
In the name of the One Who gives us fishers of men. Amen.

As we continue on in the spirit of Advent, we recognize the importance of being prepared for Jesus’ return. We also recognize that others need to be prepared, who don’t have any idea what it means to be prepared, or even that Jesus is coming back. For this reason Jesus calls men to be fishers of men. He wants all people to be ready for His return, and He has given us fishers of men to make sure that people are prepared. Amen.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, long ago You called the Apostles to search for the lost, and to prepare men for Your coming. Grant that we are so blessed, that we are never without fishers of men who will diligently prepare us for Your second coming. Amen.

Romans 15:13
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
--NKJV
In the name of the God of hope. Amen.

Hope is such a central concept to the faith, that St. Paul calls God the God of hope. Hope comes from joy and peace in believing. Hope is directly related to faith. So why is it that so many Christians are cynical? Why do so many of us complain more than we give thanks? Because our faith is weak, and we do not have the hope that we should. We’ve seen this week that our hope is as good as realized because it is God Who promises. So, on God’s side we have complete hope. But because we do not trust God as we should, we do not have the hope we should have.

What’s the cure? In order to be filled with joy and peace in believing, we must turn to God’s word and sacraments. Those are the things that build faith, and faith increases joy and peace. Joy and peace in turn give us hope. Amen.

Prayer:
Lord God, heavenly Father, give us the Holy Spirit so that we believe Your word and grow in faith in our Savior Jesus Christ. Give us joy and peace so that we may abound in hope. We ask this Jesus’ name Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Hebrews 6:11-18
And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying, "Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you." And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. For men indeed swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute. Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.
--NKJV
In the name of the One Who swears by Himself. Amen.

How certain is our hope for a resurrection to eternal joy? As certain as Jesus died on a cross. That, by the way, is a fact that basically no one denies. Think about it in the way our passage for today thinks of it: If God wants to take an oath, He has no one and nothing greater than Himself by which to swear. Therefore, He swore by Himself. That is, He raised His right hand and swore to us that we are forgiven in Christ, that we will live forever with Him in joy and peace. Yes, God raised up His right hand Jesus, and swore to us that He is at peace with us. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, goodwill toward men. Amen.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, on the night our Savior was born into this world You sent Your angels to proclaim peace to us. When our Savior road into Jerusalem on a donkey the people rose up and shouted, “Save now (hosanna), Son of David! Save now in the highest!” As our Savior hung on the cross the night of judgment came and when He died the sun shown forth with the new day, the eighth day of creation, the day of peace with You. You have shown us that Jesus has saved us in the highest and in this way brought glory to You in the highest. Grant that this same Jesus, the Sun of Righteousness, rises in our hearts, and that the night of sin is driven away. Give us the Holy Spirit to dwell with us and make us to be what You would have us be: Your dear children created anew in Your image. We ask this in Jesus’ name Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?
As King of grace He rules all things for the good of His people.

John 19:14-15
Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, "Behold your King!" But they cried out, "Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar!"
--NKJV
In the name of the King of kings. Amen.

“We have no king but Caesar,” what a shocking thing for the priests of God to say. Yesterday we noted that the kingdom of heaven peacefully coexist within the kingdom of this world, even seeking the good of the citizens of the world. But the citizens of the kingdom of the world do not understand this. All they understand is that the evil in which they find pleasure is condemned. Human will desires to be god, and woe to anyone or anything that tells the citizens of the world that human will is not the end of all things. Woe to those who say there is something greater than individual human will!

Of course this is ironic, because individual human will differs from person to person. That is why we have so much war, strife, murder, etc. Human will speaks as the second Psalm states: “The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, ‘Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us.’" God proclaimed Himself to be King throughout the Scriptures of the Jews. So the high priests confessed their complete rejection of God. In full knowledge they turned away from God’s word, seeking instead what their sinful will desired.

Still, Jesus was crucified as their king. And by God’s grace we have become citizens of His kingdom, living under His protection. He gives eternal life to us. He rules our rebellious human will, showing us that the pleasures of this life are brief and deceptive. He takes from us what is fleeting, and gives us what permanent. He gives us eternal joy and happiness in his presence. Amen.

Prayer:
Lord God, heavenly Father, You have established Christ as king on Your holy hill. You have caused us to be born again as citizens of His kingdom. Give us such a rich measure of the Holy Spirit that we never rebel against Him, but live as citizens of His kingdom in this world until He comes to take us to the place He has prepared for us. We ask this in His name Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

John 18:36
Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here."
--NKJV
In the name of the One Who is king of heaven. Amen.

Jesus came from out of this world to rescue His people scattered in the world. He journeyed here and remained for a time. He came and gave His life to save His people, but He did not teach them to rebel against the kingdom in which they are resident aliens. Instead, He urged His people to obey the laws of the kingdom in which they lived, as long as those laws did not require them to act against the laws of the heavenly kingdom of which they are citizens. In fact, it is a law of the heavenly kingdom to obey the laws of the kingdom of this world. By living in this way, or dying in this way, many citizens of this world would want to become fellow citizens of the kingdom of heaven.

Christ Jesus came and saved His people through weakness. And He calls us to be weak so that others for whom Jesus died may be won through us. The kingdom of heaven grows, and the kingdom of this world is blessed as it grows. It is blessed because the citizens of heaven seek the good of the kingdom of the world. Indeed, they seek peace and salvation for all. Amen.
Prayer:
Lord God, heavenly Father, Your kingdom exists in this world within the kingdom of this world. Help us as citizens of Your kingdom to seek the good and salvation of the citizens of this world. (Jesus said) "For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, "I find no fault in Him at all.”
--NKJV
In the name of the One Who was born to bear witness to the truth. Amen.

Jesus is the King of Truth. His purpose in coming to earth was to testify to the truth. Why? As He Himself said, “If you abide in my word, you are my disciples indeed, and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” Jesus is “full of grace and truth.” And, while Pilot was unable to recognize the truth when he stood face to face with it, he couldn’t argue against it. Pilot didn’t hear Jesus’ voice, but by God’s grace we do. By hearing Jesus’ voice, we are cleansed of all fault. But while Pilot feared people and convicted Christ for being who He is, Christ Jesus sets us free in spite of who we are. He sets us free because of Who He is--holy, innocent, King of truth, King of kings. Amen.
Holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, You sent Your Son to bear witness to the truth. He has born witness that in Him You do not condemn us. He has born witness that He has suffered the punishment of our sin and fulfilled Your holy Law in our place. Grant that by the effective working of the Holy Spirit we hear His voice. We ask this in Your Son Jesus’ name, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Ghost, ever One God, world without end. Amen.

Romans 14:4
Who are you to judge another's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand.
--NKJV
In the name of the One Who is able to make us stand. Amen.

What great encouragement to know that God will make us stand. It often seems as if everything is against our faith. We are faced with doubts inside of us and challenges to our faith outside of us. Humanly speaking, we can hardly expect to keep our faith. But God wants us to persevere. He planned our salvation and carried it out. He is serious about our salvation, and will carry it out to eternal life. Amen.

Prayer:
Lord God, heavenly Father, You chose us in Christ from eternity, and sent Him to win salvation for us. You have given us faith through the working of the Holy Spirit through Your word. Keep us in true faith so that we attain the fullness of the salvation to which You have called us. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son our Lord, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
